DJI Unveils DJI Avata FPV Drone

DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology, on Thursday launched its latest drone – the DJI Avata.

The new first-person view (FPV) drone coupled with the new DJI Goggles 2 and the intuitive DJI Motion Controller, both of which are designed specifically for FPV drone, offers an unparalleled immersive flight experience.

DJI Avata Specifications & Features

DJI Avata has a unique and compact design that is built for speed and agility. It weighs only 410 grams, which makes it easy to carry around while still integrating aerodynamic propeller guards for added safety.

It has a powerful stabilized camera, featuring a 1/1.7” (7.6×5.7mm) CMOS sensor with 48 million effective pixels that can deliver immersive aerial photography and videography at up to 4k/60fps (frames per second), as well as slow-motion footage at 2.7K videos in 50, 60, 100 or 120 fps. There is an ultra-wide-angle lens with a viewing angle of up to 155° and a set f/2.8 aperture.

Even during high-pressure aerial maneuvers, the two flagship stabilization technologies such as DJI RockSteady eliminates overall picture shake, while DJI HorizonSteady keeps the picture oriented toward true level. Users need not worry about internal storage space, as the drone allows to store data up to 20GB.

As with DJI’s latest drones, the DJI Avata is equipped with the D-Cinelike color mode that allows a broad color palette enabling detailed chromatic adjustments to your works.

Further, DJI’s unequalled flight technology allows the drone to hover like a traditional drone, accelerate like a racer, zoom in and out of tight spaces, and stop “in a fraction of a second”. If it lands upside down, the new Turtle Mode lets it to flip back up and take off again.

Coming to modes, the DJI Avata allows pilots from beginners to professionals to choose from three flight modes such as Normal (N) Mode, Manual (M) Mode (only with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2), and Sport (S) Mode to match their skill level.

Users can also control the drone using the existing DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 and the DJI FPV Goggles V2, the company’s next-generation video headset. Both connect using DJI O3+ transmission, which is the company’s most powerful and reliable technology for precise control, ultra-low latency, and detailed video at 1080p/100fps with H.265 decoding.

While the DJI FPV Goggles 2 is a new flight control technology that offers 1080p livestreamed video at up to 100fps, the DJI Motion Controller steers the drone as per the movement of the pilot’s hand. DJI says the transmission delay is just 30 milliseconds and the headset works at a maximum distance of 10km (6.2 miles).

There’s also a new dedicated Emergency Brake and Hover feature that will stop the drone and hovering in place at any time during the flight. Failsafe Return to Home is another near feature that brings the drone back to its home point automatically with a press of a button, or in the event that transmission is lost or the battery reaches a critically low level.

The drone also uses DJI’s GEO 2.0 geofencing system to advise pilots of airspace restrictions and potential hazards, and to automatically prevent drones from flying near certain high-risk locations, such as airports.

Lastly, DJI Avata can last up to 18 minutes from its 2,420 mAh battery and the battery life is 11.6 kilometers. The drone is controlled with the DJI Virtual Flight App, a free simulator app that familiarizes new pilots with drone flying movements in an easy, fun and risk-free environment.

DJI Avata is available to order now from its website and most authorized retail partners in several configurations.

While the standalone version of DJI Avata retails for $629 USD, the DJI Avata Pro-View Combo retails for $1388 USD which includes DJI Avata, DJI Goggles 2 and the DJI Motion Controller.
